Tamara’s Bat Mitzvah

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to shoot my first Bat Mitzvah. I’ve only seen one on television so I was pumped to attend my first! My good friend Sara is Jewish and was nice enough to recommend me to a wonderful family. They were so warm and welcoming, which made my first experience even better.

The religious ceremony was quite strict. I was restricted to a very small area were I was unable to move around freely or use flash during the event. I understood the reasoning and instead of pouting like a young child (because I wanted to so badly!) I had to quickly figure ways to make this work. I was trusted to photograph an extremely important event so I had to make sure I captured every moment. Although the conditions weren’t perfect, I was happy with the results given the situation. Because the nature of this event, I will respect the family and not post photographs of this private and sacred moment.

I can however show you photographs from the after party! I’ve only heard Bat Mitzvah were fun and sometimes very lavish, but I had to see it for myself. These young teenagers really knew how to party! The event was hosted at a club in downtown Boston (I wish I could host a party in Boston period!) and was complete with a DJ, Emcee, Air Brush t-shirt artist, and Air Brush tattoo artist! Here’s a snapshot of their night.
